PCR strapping prepares automated logistics for tighter rules

Packaging compliance is moving closer to the centre of logistics technology decisions. From 1 April 2027, the UK Plastic Packaging Tax is expected to recognise only post-consumer recycled (PCR) content when assessing the 30% recycled-content threshold. Pre-industrial recycled material will no longer count.

For manufacturers, distributors and logistics providers, the change affects more than purchasing policy. Strapping is part of the automated load-securing process, so any material change must preserve tension, consistency and machine performance while supporting environmental targets.

A compliance-ready material choice

Mosca has introduced a grey polypropylene strap containing at least 35% PCR material. The level is above the UK threshold described for 2027 and matches the 35% minimum expected for transport packaging under the proposed Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

The higher content gives companies operating across the UK and European markets a single direction for future planning. It can also reduce the risk that packaging purchases fall below the qualifying threshold and trigger additional tax costs.

Designed for existing automation

The grey appearance is linked to the nature of post-consumer feedstock. Consumer waste includes pigments, labels and printing inks, making consistent production of pale recycled plastics difficult. In this case, colour also provides a visible indication that recycled material is present.

According to the supplied product information, the strap is tested for use on Mosca equipment and is compatible with a broad range of automatic and semi-automatic strapping machines. That matters operationally: businesses can pursue a more sustainable consumable without an immediate machinery replacement programme. Mosca also offers PET strapping with high PCR content for heavier-duty applications.

The new PP strap is due to become available in autumn. An early trial programme will allow businesses to assess it before wider adoption. Stock is planned for the company’s Nottingham facility, with same-day despatch intended to support continuity as demand grows.
