Romac expands cold-chain capacity with double-deck trailers
Temperature-controlled logistics specialist Romac Logistics is upgrading its UK fleet with 100 moving double-deck refrigerated trailers from Tiger Trailers and 200 Renault Trucks T480 tractor units supplied by Diamond Trucks.
The investment follows the opening of Romac’s flagship distribution facility in Chesterfield. By combining additional warehouse infrastructure with higher-capacity transport assets, the company aims to increase network capacity while maintaining service reliability as customer demand grows.
More payload per temperature-controlled journey
The new trailers can carry as many as 54 pallets. Each is equipped with a Thermo King A500 single-temperature refrigeration unit, allowing the fleet to handle chilled or frozen products within the relevant operating configuration.
The moving double-deck design is intended to raise payload capacity without requiring the same number of vehicle movements. For a cold-chain operator, that can improve fleet productivity while supporting its sustainability objectives. The equipment also incorporates established moving-deck technology focused on durability and operator safety.
Fleet and infrastructure expand together
Romac’s 200 new Renault Trucks T480s extend a relationship with Renault Trucks and Diamond Trucks. The tractor units are intended to support fuel efficiency, uptime, safety and driver comfort as the business grows.
The order also builds on Tiger Trailers’ previous supply of 60 ambient curtainsider trailers and 20 single-deck refrigerated trailers. For industrial logistics operators, the programme illustrates how trailer configuration, refrigeration technology and tractor capacity can be coordinated rather than developed as separate investments.
Rob McAdoo, founder of Romac Logistics, said the fleet had to evolve alongside the Chesterfield site so the company could offer customers greater capacity and resilience. Tiger Trailers sales director Darren Holland said the double-deck reefers would enable more chilled and frozen produce to be moved in fewer journeys.
