BYD targets European heavy transport with 600km electric tractor
BYD Commercial Vehicles is broadening its European electric truck strategy with a new 44-tonne tractor aimed at operations traditionally dominated by diesel. Presented at IAA Transportation 2026, the ETT 44 4×2 combines a 651kWh battery with a powertrain rated above 1,000hp, or 750kW.
BYD claims the vehicle can travel up to 600km on a charge. The dedicated electric platform uses the company’s Blade Battery technology and supports charging at up to 1.5MW. Its Flash Charging system is designed to raise the battery from 20% to 80% in roughly 20 minutes, adding as much as 400km of claimed range.
Electrification becomes an operating system
The announcement is significant because BYD is not presenting the tractor as an isolated product. The company is combining vehicles with charging equipment, energy storage, energy management, fleet tools and financing or leasing services. For industrial operators, that integrated model could reduce the number of suppliers and technical interfaces involved in electrifying a fleet.
High-power charging also shifts the operational question from simply having enough battery capacity to coordinating energy demand, depot infrastructure and vehicle schedules. The potential benefit is shorter turnaround time, although real-world range and charging performance will depend on payload, route, weather and site capacity.
A portfolio for different duty cycles
The ETT 44 sits at the top of an expanded range spanning 3.5 to 44 tonnes. BYD is also showing heavy rigid trucks, a 26-tonne swap-body vehicle, hooklift models, regional distribution trucks and vehicles for last-mile, municipal and sanitation work. Electric yard tractors are another focus; their predictable, contained operating patterns make them a practical early application for zero-emission equipment. The range includes the T020 and T028 rigid models, while common battery, charging and energy-management foundations are intended to simplify fleet deployment. Driver ergonomics and safety are also part of the ETT 44 proposition, including an advanced driver-assistance system and a claimed five-star Euro NCAP rating. Together, the launch signals BYD’s ambition to compete in Europe’s heavy-truck market with technology and infrastructure delivered as one package.
