Why logistics technology must solve problems before it dazzles
Logistics is often portrayed as a cautious technology adopter. A closer look suggests a different explanation: in a tightly connected supply chain, reliability matters more than novelty.
Warehouse systems, transport platforms, enterprise applications and customer tools now support almost every stage of logistics. But when these systems fail to exchange information accurately, the consequences can spread quickly. Teams may have to fall back on spreadsheets, email and phone calls while delays accumulate across the network.

Integration is often the real innovation
Research in NashTech’s report Differentiating with Custom Software in Supply Chain and Logistics illustrates this priority. Among 150 senior logistics and supply chain technology decision-makers, 43% identified improved integration with existing systems as a key reason to develop custom software. Only 33% selected innovation or differentiation as a primary motivation.
That does not indicate inertia. Many operators have technology estates shaped by years of expansion, acquisitions and separate platform choices. Replacing everything at once is usually too disruptive and expensive. Targeted software that connects systems, improves data flow and removes manual workarounds can offer a more practical route to progress. NashTech’s findings reflect that operational perspective.
The gains may be modest at individual process level: a cleaner warehouse handover, fewer exceptions or less reconciliation between applications. Across a high-volume network, however, such improvements can reduce delay, cost and operational risk.
AI needs stronger foundations
Artificial intelligence will test whether logistics companies retain this discipline. Seventy-one per cent of technology leaders expect wider AI adoption to significantly affect custom software development. At the same time, 46% have found it difficult to connect advanced AI with legacy systems, and 44% report insufficient internal expertise.
The figures underline a practical lesson. AI cannot independently fix inconsistent records, disconnected platforms or unclear process ownership. Companies should first identify where operations repeatedly lose time, accuracy or control, then select the appropriate response—whether that is AI, integration or a simpler process change.
For logistics, the competitive advantage may not belong to the fastest adopter. It may belong to the company that knows which technology will strengthen the network and which will merely create another impressive demonstration.
