Ferrovalle adds AI planning to Mexico City rail terminal

Ferrovalle is extending its digital transformation into terminal operations with a Smart Yard programme at its Mexico City intermodal hub. The operator has selected Inform’s Syncrotess Optimization Plus platform, with deployment scheduled for June 2027.

The technology will sit alongside Ferrovalle’s existing terminal operating system rather than replace it. By combining data from current systems with continuously refreshed optimisation recommendations, the platform is intended to improve decisions covering container storage, equipment deployment and train loading and discharge.

Optimisation across the terminal

Ferrovalle handled approximately 550,000 TEUs through its intermodal division in 2025, placing the operation among Latin America’s largest inland intermodal facilities. Much of the planning process currently depends on dispatcher expertise and manual criteria. The new digital layer is designed to give planners a more consistent view of changing yard conditions and available resources.

The initial scope includes eight rubber-tyred gantry cranes, four reach stackers and 14 terminal tractors. Inform’s Yard, Crane, Vehicle and Train Load Optimizers will work together to support equipment allocation, crane activity, vehicle dispatch and train preparation. Ferrovalle’s targets include higher equipment throughput, a greater share of billable moves and improved performance against truck, loading and discharge service levels.

Digital control of customs and train plans

Integration will cover train consist data, load plans, container status, clearance information and operational updates. The architecture must handle both customs-cleared and customs-controlled areas, as well as differing procedures for maritime and cross-border containers. Inspection and loading zones will be included through automated tractor assignments and status exchanges with the TOS.

Connection to the Equipment Control System will allow weights to be verified during normal crane lifts, avoiding separate weighing stops. Before a container is released for train loading, Ferrovalle’s TOS will validate the required customs and documentation clearance. The Train Load Optimizer can then create plans using available containers, train configuration, restrictions and clearance status, while allowing planners to revise proposed sequences.

The contract was signed in early September 2026. The planned nine-month implementation illustrates how established industrial systems can be retained while adding an optimisation layer to improve operational responsiveness.
