Gdańsk port sets new August throughput record

The Port of Gdańsk processed more than 8 million tonnes of cargo in August, its first monthly result above that threshold. Throughput was 13.3% higher than in August 2025, highlighting the growing role of Poland’s Baltic gateway in regional supply chains.

The port handled 57.7 million tonnes in the first eight months of 2026, a 10% increase year on year. August also extended the momentum recorded in July, when monthly throughput reached 7.9 million tonnes.

Broader cargo growth

The increase was not dependent on one traffic stream. General cargo rose 21%, equivalent to almost 470,000 additional tonnes compared with the same month a year earlier. Container tonnage increased 15%, while the number of containers measured in TEUs grew 16%.

Liquid fuels remained the largest segment, reaching 3.9 million tonnes after a 5% annual increase. The category represented almost half of August’s total. Ore recorded the strongest percentage growth, with volumes up 311%, and grain increased 90%. Other bulk cargo was the only major category to contract, falling 12%.

Implications for industrial logistics

For manufacturers, energy suppliers and logistics providers, the figures indicate sustained demand for a mix of container, bulk and liquid-fuel handling. A diversified cargo profile can also make port operations less exposed to weakness in a single market, although the published figures do not assess future demand or capacity constraints.

Across the first eight months, liquid fuels accounted for about 26 million tonnes and general cargo for 20.8 million tonnes. Continued investment in port facilities and connecting infrastructure could improve the ability of automated handling, tracking and inland transport systems to support larger flows. If activity remains at its current level through the rest of the year, Gdańsk is positioned for a stronger 2026 performance.
