Portek takeover puts smarter port operations in focus

A.P. Moller Capital is set to acquire 100% of Singapore-based Portek International from Mitsui & Co. through its Emerging Markets Infrastructure Fund II. The transaction would give the investor control of a cargo-terminal operator whose assets span Africa, Asia and Europe.

Portek has interests in seven multipurpose terminals in Algeria, Gabon, Indonesia, Latvia, Malta and Vietnam. Founded in 1988, the company combines terminal operations with port engineering and maintenance services, mainly managed from Singapore and Indonesia.

A platform for operational improvement

The business handles about seven million tonnes of bulk cargo, 700,000 containers and approximately 90,000 vehicles annually. Its roughly 1,400 employees support both the terminals and headquarters, giving the acquisition an operational dimension beyond a simple change in ownership.

Following completion, A.P. Moller Capital says it will work with Portek’s local teams to develop existing capabilities. The stated priorities include operating performance, governance, safety and disciplined capital allocation. Environmental performance is also part of the plan, including work on emissions-reduction planning.

For industrial customers, the relevance lies in the potential to coordinate improvements across a geographically dispersed network. Port engineering capability, maintenance expertise and local operating knowledge can support more consistent processes while allowing each terminal to respond to its own trade flows. The announcement does not specify automation or digital projects, but the focus on performance and emissions creates a framework in which data-driven asset management and more efficient equipment use could become important operational levers.

Expansion of a logistics infrastructure portfolio

The proposed acquisition adds to A.P. Moller Capital’s interests in Philippines-based AC Logistics and Bergé Logistics in Spain and Latin America. It also follows signed agreements to acquire majority stakes in Globex Investissement and Euroports, extending the investor’s exposure to transport and logistics infrastructure.

Semih Gökmen, partner at A.P. Moller Capital, described Portek as a strong match for the firm’s investment strategy and highlighted its local teams and established operations. Director Kim Thagaard Pedersen said the portfolio offered scope for continued development.

Completion remains subject to customary closing requirements, including regulatory and other third-party approvals. Mitsui’s stewardship was recognised by A.P. Moller Capital as the ownership transition moves forward.
