Symbotic adds intelligent sortation to its warehouse automation platform

Symbotic is expanding its warehouse automation technology through the acquisition of cellumation GmbH, a Bremen-based company whose celluveyor system uses software-controlled, omnidirectional movement to sort products.

The transaction gives Symbotic access to a patented platform built from independently controlled cells. Unlike conventional conveyor lines, each cell can direct an item in any direction. Movement and routing are therefore combined on the same surface, allowing the equipment to determine an item’s destination while transporting it.

More throughput in less space

For industrial operators, the main attraction is the potential to reduce the footprint and complexity of sortation equipment. Symbotic expects the technology to support higher throughput and a broader product mix than traditional conveyor-based arrangements, while occupying a fraction of the space. A denser layout could release warehouse capacity for storage or other operational uses and may also reduce capital equipment requirements.

The company sees the technology as an important component for future inbound and outbound robotic cells. Its software-driven architecture could simplify those cells by replacing parts of the conventional conveying and sorting infrastructure with a flexible handling surface.

cellumation has already deployed the technology with postal, e-commerce and logistics operators. The company will retain its own identity and continue supporting existing customers, while its platform becomes available both as part of Symbotic systems and as a standalone product for customers and other integrators.

European reach and standalone growth

The acquisition also supports Symbotic’s expansion in Europe. cellumation contributes regional deployment experience, customer relationships and a local leadership and operating organisation. Co-founder and chief executive Hendrik Thamer and co-founder and chief technology officer Claudio Uriarte will remain with the business.

Symbotic says the purchase follows its acquisitions of ARMS Innovations and Fox Robotics. Together, the deals point to a portfolio strategy that combines integrated warehouse systems with specialised automation products that can also be sold independently. The approach gives industrial companies another route to adopt intelligent sortation, whether they are investing in a complete automation system or upgrading a specific material-flow process. More information on the wider platform is available through Symbotic’s portfolio.
